Veteran actress Connie Chiume has died at the age of 72, at Garden City Hospital, her family have announced.
Her death was announced by her family on Instagram: ‘The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume.
Chiume starred in Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She also starred in Beyonce’s 2020 musical film Black Is King.
In Black Panther Chiume starred as Zawavari – member of the Wakandan Tribal Council and former leader of the Mining Tribe – alongside the likes of Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett and Michaela Cole.
Her most recent role was in Heart of the Hunter, released earlier this year, and she also appeared in TV series Soon Comes Night six months ago.
Chiume appeared on South African TV in shows such as Rhythm City. She also starred in Zone 14, Soul City, Mazinyo Dot Q and Gomora.
In 2022, she was honoured with South African Film and TV Awards’ lifetime achievement award for her many performances.

The South African government wrote on X: ‘Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered.
