The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has signed a multi-year deal with the giant video platform YouTube, giving the exclusive global streaming company the rights to the oscars and related Academy content .
The Oscars’ switch to YouTube aims to tap into the streaming platform’s global audience of over 2 billion. This shows the gradual shift from traditional broadcast Television by large entertainment corporations to digital streaming.
This deal brings to an end the long standing broadcast partnership with ABC, which runs through to 2028 with the 100th Oscars showcasing that year.
ABC has been televising the Oscars for most of the past 60 years, but broader media trends have shown traditional TV ratings for even major live events have declined.
