Newly appointed National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Hon. Dikko, has unveiled an ambitious development agenda aimed at transforming the Nigeria’s sports landscape and nurturing a new generation of elite athletes.
Speaking during his inaugural briefing, Dikko outlined a multi-pronged vision focused on building world-class training infrastructure, strengthening athlete support systems, and expanding grassroots participation.
According to him, the NSC is preparing to launch a nationwide network of Sports Development Centres designed to serve as hubs for athlete discovery, coaching, and performance enhancement.
“We will build centres, empower athletes, and inspire a new generation,” Dikko stated, describing the initiative as a legacy project that will shape the future of sports for decades.
He emphasised that the new centres will give young athletes access to modern facilities, specialised coaching, and scholarships, helping bridge the gap between raw talent and international performance standards.
In addition, the commission plans to partner with state governments, private investors, and international organisations to support infrastructure and technical expertise.
Beyond physical facilities, Dikko highlighted athlete welfare as a major priority. He announced plans for an Athlete Support Fund, insurance schemes, and educational programs to ensure athletes receive comprehensive assistance during and after their careers.
“Success in sport is not just about the podium—it’s about dignity, support, and opportunity,” he noted.
Grassroots development also forms a major pillar of the new agenda. Community leagues, school competitions, and regional talent hunts are expected to drive participation and broaden the talent pool.
Dikko said the NSC wants to make sports a tool for youth development, national unity, and economic inclusion.
“We are inspired by the passion of our young people. Our mission is to give them the platform to dream—and the structure to make that dream a reality,” he said.
The bold vision has been welcomed by stakeholders across the sports sector, though many stress that sustained funding and transparency will be key to its success.
With plans already underway, Dikko expressed confidence that the NSC’s new strategy will redefine the country’s sporting future.
