Two British-Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, made history by becoming mayors of London boroughs.
Opeyemi Bright became Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham at age 29, making her the borough’s youngest-ever mayor.
She had previously become its youngest Labour councillor at 22 in 2018.
Jason Jackson became Mayor of Islington, making him the first Nigerian-born person to hold the office since the borough was established in 1900.
He was first elected as a councillor in 2022. Both were inaugurated for the 2025–26 mayoral year in May 2025.
